Top Ten Tips for the Savvy Traveller

1

Always check the Internet to see if your high street travel agent is offering a competitive deal.

2

If you go on two or more holidays a year, and particularly if you go on several weekend breaks it’s much cheaper to opt for annual travel insurance than to buy lots of single trip policies.

3

Make sure that a cheap flight doesn’t turn into an expensive taxi ride. Check that the airport and your accommodation are not miles away from the main attractions.

4

Shop around, don’t just leap at the first trip you see and check out whether it’s cheaper to go for a package deal or to buy flights and accommodation separately.

5

If you are only going away for the weekend, try to restrict what you take with you. Just having hand luggage means a quick getaway from the airport, maximising your time on the ground.

6

Explore all the options for getting to the UK airport. A day or two at the airport carpark may be cheaper than train fares if more than one person is travelling.

7

Travelling mid-week or even departing on a Thursday rather than Friday can slash the price of your trip, as can travelling later in the day. Try to stay as flexible as possible.

8

Learning a few words of the lingo will get you a long way. On the whole, locals will appreciate it and it may help you to avoid some sticky situations.

9

Make sure you have a small amount of the local currency when you arrive in case the bureau de change is closed or the ATM is out of order.

10

Make sure you are aware of local laws and customs everything from driving on the right side of the road to knowing how much to tip.
